BALMES VS.

As we will discover in this blog, Alicante has repeated several streets that is dedicated to the same person, place or thing. We recently spoke to the streets of August, although it is not repeated, is split into two sections separated by a block of houses (!)

will leave for later repeated some of these streets and we will focus today in two urban streets that sound almost the same and are often confused: Balmes Street and the Plaza del Doctor Balmis.

Let's start with the first of it. The origin of Balmes Street is to be found in the square on which stood the Central Market, the Plaza de Balmes which was located between the streets / avenues of Captain Segarra (before extension of Chestnut), Calderón de la Barca and Alfonso the Wise.

The oldest data we found this place in 1887. At that time Jaime Esquembre and Puerto commissioned the architect José González Artés building a house at the junction of Calle de Bazán (now Garcia Morato), Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio and Plaza de Balmes. It seems that this is the site where years later the Hall would rise later would lead Modern Cinema Lounge at Monumental Modern-now sadly gone.

The first thing we found on the construction of a building to Market at the Plaza de Balmes 1900. At that time they submit the projects of architects and Guardiola Fajardo appearing years later in Juan Vidal. the end, the project would be started this by Prospero Lafarga and finished by Juan Vidal and in the 20's. Since then the name would Balmes to label one of the facades of the square, becoming street. In 1991 the new position resulting from the demolition of the vegetable market renamed Market Square, named in 2010 at the request Alicante Vivo, is being gradually phased out by the Plaza on May 25 in memory of the terrible bombing of 1938 fascist.

But who was Balmes? Let's see. Jaume Balmes i Urpi was a Catalan philosopher and theologian who lived in the first half of the nineteenth century. Wrote among other works "political considerations on the situation in Spain", "Religion shown the reach of children" or "Letters to a skeptic in matters of religion" newspaper founded in Madrid " The thought of the nation." Some of his works have been republished recently. The marking of this place probably took place after the Revolution of 1868 since according to Vidal Tur Balmes ideas were fashionable at that time on the grounds that the Academy Square Balmes. There was also Villegas Street Circle Jaime Balmes "

Why not, here are a few levels:

Year 1897. In the center of the Plaza de Balmes
we installed the Teatro Circo. It is currently in Orihuela.
a wooden building was dismantled and mobile.

Year 1900 approx. Balmes Square
clearly distinguished. P. Street Mariana appears as the current

Year 1915 approx. El Barrio de San Fernando
or Las Delicias is just a project.

Year 1920 approx. La Plaza de Balmes
plaza is cited as important.

Now to the Plaza del Doctor Balmis. This charming little plaza arising out of demolition of dilapidated houses a block located between the streets of the Lemons, Our Lady of the Forsaken, El Cid (before Paradise) and Canalejas (formerly Vaults). The demolition of these houses was the responsibility of the employer to cooperage José Torrent and Maluenda (or Maru) why this site was known as Plaza de Torrent, although it seems that until 1919 it was dedicated to the place lacked Balmis official name. Still found in 1917 newspaper advertisements that refer to a home school that has balconies to the "Square Torrent.

Torrent
can say a ruler who was born in the then suburb of San Francisco. She was active in the Liberal ranks and was playing Alicante city council charges including that of member of the Local Board of Education. He died on February 4, 1898. At least he had two sons named José Emilio and Torrent Romá.

know your business that opened in 1863 and the December 12 1907 installed on your cooperage Explanda of Spain 14 (today Canalejas Park-Dr. Ramón y Cajal) was destroyed in a fire, although it seems that re-opened since its data are operation in 1910 by his son Joseph . In 1928 he was advertising in trade directories already addressed Ramón y Cajal 14.

Returning to the history of the square, we know that the February 7, 1919, Alicante City Council agreed to give the name of Doctor Balmis to Niagara Street (before cataract) but seven days after the approval is revoked and decide which is the Plaza de Torrent the pass to be dedicated to Francisco Xavier Balmis . Five days after the municipal authorities Rep. José Francos Rodríguez, military and religious came to discover the sign of the square (the work of Vicente Bañuls , disappeared) accompanied by the Band and the large audience present there.

Fountain Square of General Mancha in 2010.
to the 90 was in Dr. Balmis

One of the most memorable elements of this square is the fountain adorned it until the 90's and today remains half-hidden in the Plaza del General Mancha. It appears that in April 1915 decided to move a source from the Plaza de Isabel II (Gabriel Miró) to the Plaza de Torrent (Dr. Balmis). We do not know if he reached the square or stayed in the nearby Calle de San Quintin, because in 1947 he ordered to move the source of the street to the Plaza del Dr. Balmis. Could it be that in 1915 the source was direct and not San Quentin Balmis? "He moved and then returned? To be the same source we are, no doubt, to the source traveling in Spain ...

As final data on the history of this place, adding that the Civil War left its mark on it. Its basement housed (and home) an air raid shelter for 250 people. In 1945 the municipal architect Felix Arzúa made some plans for this shelter from the Civil War (and many others), fearing an Allied invasion in the Mediterranean. Let us now
Doctor
Francisco Xavier de Balmis and Berenguer: born in 1783 in the current Fruit Plaza (now Holy Face) in Alicante. As a physician up to the English colonies in America studying STDs in 1794 published his work "Treatise on the virtues of agave and begonia" . After becoming a physician to Charles IV convinces him to cover the cost of an expedition to America and the Philippines to spread the new smallpox vaccine which carried several children inoculated. Balmis died in Madrid in 1819. Favorite Son of Alicante is since May 2003, is a school with his name and has a statue donated by Mexico in Sant Joan d'Alacant. It also has a dedicated street in Mexico City. It is planned for 2011 in addition to shooting a film about his expedition. We end this

article with a completely level:

Year 1853. Paradise Street (El Cid) still does not cross the street
Vaults (Canalejas). In the decade of 1880
would last until Luchana Street (Dr. Gadea)
in the foreground is occupied by the walls.

Year 1900 approx. The Plaza del Doctor
Balmis not exist yet.

Although a level of 1915 approx. Cid Street crosses
Canalejas (which still call Vaults).
is a little flat
outdated
