The city street is filled with friendly names, the origin of many of which have been lost in the mists of time. Unfortunately, in Alicante those names were gradually replaced with more serious from the second half of the nineteenth century and were never recovered. Other cities like Elche, or it does Xixona recovered again traditional denominations.
Today we deal with a street with a curious name. This is Tato Street located in the primordial del Barrio de San Blas. We already anticipate that refers to a person, not the famous "Tato" the popular saying.
During the nineteenth century there was an unwritten rule that said that street names should be as short as possible (we, contrary to what happens today.) Thus we have the streets of Ojeda, Coloma, Brown (General), Foglietti, Maisonnave, Lanuza and some others. With more than enough to remember the name of a person. That over the years has meant that, for example, many people think that Paris Street refers to the French capital when it is not. Well
say who was Mr. Tato:

That over the years has meant that, for example, many people think that Paris Street refers to the French capital when it is not. Well
say who was Mr. Tato:
The street is dedicated to the merchant and founder of the Barrio de San Blas, Jose Maria Tato which we know was born about 1803, died unmarried and picked up the first group of 40 houses the neighborhood in the second half of the nineteenth century (60 'approx.) This square block of 10 houses on each side was defined by current Guarner Bond Street (formerly Station) Tato, Doctor Santaolalla (formerly Pilgrim) and Charlotte Pasarón.
Her nephew Julian Tato Thomas, born in Ceuta in 1833 established a steam-driven flour mill in that city block. Tato Thomas would Alicante Mayor for a short time in 1882. C ontrajo married Henrietta Girones Ortega (sister of Juan Ortega, both street in the neighborhood.) From this marriage would be born at least four sons named Henry, Thomas (editor of The Republican Grader) , Ramon and Jose (father of Gaspar Tato Cumming, also street el barrio y que falleció en 2002 a los 96 años de edad).
Tomás también estuvo vinculado a la fundación del Barrio de Tato (así lo llaman en 1908). En 1877 solicita la dotación de agua corriente para el grupo de casas (seguramente para poner en marcha su molino movido a vapor)
With the advent of the Civil War, Tato Street is transferred to the name of Lieutenant Castillo. José Castillo Saenz de Tejada (1901-1936) was a Military assigned to the Anti-fascist Military Union Republican who was killed in Madrid on July 12, 1936. By way of revenge was assassinated days after José Calvo Sotelo . This latest killing would lead to the advancement of the military uprising of 18 July 1936. Not only the neighborhood's streets were renamed. The neighborhood itself was renamed Liberty neighborhood until 1939.
In December 1940 the mother of Carmen and Gaspar Tato Cumming, Ms Mercedes Cumming Tato , daughter of vice-consul Gaspar (Jasper) Cumming Macaulay , a native of Belfast (another street!) And Carmen Tato Tato , asks the road still dedicated to Lieutenant Castillo Street again called Tato after the founder of the neighborhood Tato Thomas Julian, which is approved in full. Suggests that both Thomas as Tato Tato José María founded the San Blas neighborhood but confuses the origin of the name of the street. It is not surprising therefore that there was a company called "Tato and nephews."
So just read it is clear Tatos both (and a few others) had an important role in the founding and development of the Barrio de San Blas. Today
Street Tato Bond begins in Guarner and ends in a somewhat strange in the corner of Calle del Doctor Santaolalla, although the street ends abruptly just over there, particularly at home in front the said street, leading into the house next door to the first issue of the street from Cardinal Payá (until 1927 called St. Augustine). This is because Tato Street ended at the corner of Industrial Alicante and that "border" between the two streets has continued to this day despite the opening of the Rue de Callosa de Segura.
Now as usual we put some historical maps:

Siguiendo con los orígenes del barrio, sabemos que se instaló entre las casas de Tato y la estación de MZA una fábrica de chocolates llamada "La Industrial Alicantina" propiedad de los Guarner Brothers Bank. Thanks to the proximity of the factory, Tato mill, railroad station and other plants such as esparto that were settled in the area, the neighborhood was growing rapidly.
